ICTS invites applications from highly motivated candidates interested in pursuing doctoral research in theoretical and mathematical sciences. ICTS has world-class research groups in astrophysical relativity, fluid dynamics and turbulence, mathematics, physical biology, statistical physics and condensed matter physics, string theory and quantum gravity. More details of research at ICTS can be found here.
ADMISSIONS
All applicants are required to appear for national level entrance tests (TIFR graduate studies admission test, JEST, GATE, UGC/CSIR test for JRF) conducted at different centres nationally. These entrance tests will cover basic topics in physics, mathematics or engineering. Top candidates from these tests can apply to appear in the next phase of the selection process. Performance in the national level entrance test, along with the additional information requested in the online application form will be used to shortlist candidates for the interviews.
Students selected for Integrated PhD (BSc/BTech/MTech/BS graduates) need to complete the coursework requirements and register for PhD within 3 years of joining. For regular PhD students (MSc/MS graduates) the coursework requirement and PhD registration should be completed within 2 years from joining. The coursework includes a core (both theory and experiment) and elective/reading courses as well as research projects. At the end of the coursework, the student needs to pass a comprehensive exam after which he/she can register for the PhD. Details of graduate coursework can be found here. Successful candidates will receive the degree through the Physics Subject Board of the TIFR Graduate School.
For students whose final examination results for their qualifying degree are not declared by the time of joining (approximately end July/ beginning August): you will be admitted on a provisional basis, subject to the passing of the relevant degree examination. The admission will be regularised on the production of mark sheets/provisional/final degree certificate of the qualifying degree examination.
If your qualifying degree is a Bachelor's degree (1st degree after Std. XII): Payment of fellowship will be withheld in full till documentary evidence is submitted of having completed the qualifying degree.
If your qualifying degree is a Master's degree (and you already have a Bachelor's degree): Payment of fellowship will be at a lower rate (IPhD) until documentary evidence is submitted of having completed the qualifying degree.
In both cases, once the admission is regularised, arrears corresponding to the full amount of fellowship will be paid calculated from the date of joining.
Eligibility:
For the PhD program
- MSc/MS in Physics, or equivalent undergraduate/master's program(s) of duration not less than 5 years in total.
For the Integrated PhD program
- BSc/BS/BTech/MTech graduates or any other degree in Science, Engineering or Medicine of duration not less than 3 years in total.
Entrance Tests:
The first level of selection to the ICTS graduate program is performed using results from the following national exams:
- TIFR GS Exam
- JEST (Physics)
- GATE (Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Sciences)
- CSIR UGC NET (Physical Sciences - JRF eligible)
Candidates with M.Tech./M.E./M.S. (Engg.) can submit their earlier valid scores of GATE/equivalent. The dates and centres of all the tests are advertised in major national newspapers.
Eligibility Criteria for the Entrance Tests:
JEST: To be announced
GATE: To be announced
