International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bengaluru invites applications from academically bright and motivated students for the ICTS - S. N. Bhatt Memorial Excellence Fellowship Program which typically happens every summer around the middle of May till the middle of July.

This program offers an opportunity to undergraduate/ masters students of Science and Engineering to work with faculty and post-doctoral fellows of the Centre and to participate in research at the frontiers of knowledge. Students from previous years have contributed productively to research at ICTS, and many have continued research careers at universities around the world.

Selected candidates will be provided stipends and accommodation during this program.

Applications are invited from both Indian and foreign nationals.

Applications are invited in the following two areas: 

Physical and Natural Sciences
1) Astrophysics and Relativity 
2) Biological Physics
3) Statistical Physics and Condensed Matter
4) Fluid Dynamics and Turbulence
5) String Theory and Quantum Gravity

Mathematical Sciences
1) Applied and Computational Mathematics
2) Computer Science
3) Algebra, Geometry and Physical Mathematics
4) Probability Theory 

Eligibility
Undergraduate students of science, mathematics and engineering, who would have finished their third or fourth year of their undergraduate program by May 2027 are eligible to apply. Exceptional undergraduates who would have finished their second year by May 2027 may also apply. Masters degree students and those who have completed their undergraduate are also welcome to apply.  

Addendum to eligibility (clarification) dated 29.10.2026: 
Masters degree students and those who have completed their undergraduate are also welcome to apply. 
Please read the above line as: Masters degree students who are not in their final year by May 2027 are also welcome to apply. 

How to apply
Interested candidates should apply online with their CV, academic and referee (at least two) details.

Online applications are preferred. However, if applicants do not have internet access, click here for the offline application instructions. If you are submitting online, do not send hard copies of your application materials. The deadline applies to both online and offline applications.

Applications will be reviewed in January and the results will be declared in February.
