Promise in Science and Mathematics (PRISM) program aims to provide a hands-on experience with science and mathematics experiments to school students. The program page also serves as a repository of interesting science activities which could be done at school with supervision from the science teacher.

Past Talks
Kaushik Basu (University of California, Berkeley)
9:30 am to 1:30 pm Saturday, 03 August 2024
Foyer Area, Chandrasekhar Auditorium, ICTS-TIFR
Program Description We will explore the physics behind drag forces with dropping cones made from various materials. Unlike familiar physics problems, the equation of motion offers no analytical solution. However, we can use dimensional analysis to gain substantial information about the velocity...more
Rahul Chajwa (Stanford University, California)
9:30 am to 1:30 pm Thursday, 02 May 2024
Foyer Area, Chandrasekhar Auditorium, ICTS-TIFR
Program Description Roughly half of the oxygen we breathe comes from tiny creatures drifting and swimming in the ocean, termed plankton, and often called wonders of the drifting world and jewels of the sea . If you scoop some water out of the ocean using a plankton net, you will find that our...more

10:00 am to 1:30 pm Friday, 22 December 2023
Foyer Area, Chandrasekhar Auditorium, ICTS-TIFR
Program Description We will use origami folding techniques (on a square piece of paper) to discover how we can chop up a line fairly or at least close to fairly. Students will be expected to provide justifications for the approximation method using their own ideas. (Spoiler alert: continued...more
Manish Jain, Jyothi Krishnan and Ashutosh Bhakuni (Centre for Creative learning)
10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday, 02 December 2023
ICTS, Bengaluru
Join us in a journey of exploring non-intuitive toys and machines, some of which have had profound impact on our lives like the Enigma Machine, and some of which are apparently simple but involve complex principles. We will focus on exploring the mysteries behind these toys and some intriguing...more
Shubha Tewari (University of Massachusetts Amherst)
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm Thursday, 10 August 2023
Foyer Area, Chandrasekhar Auditorium, ICTS-TIFR
Program Description Participants will get an opportunity to play with everyday materials found in the playground or a kitchen, and think about their observations in the context of the expected behaviors of the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas that they learn about in school. Learning Goals Make...more
Kaushik Basu (University of California, Berkeley)
4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Thursday, 15 December 2022
Foyer Area, Chandrasekhar Auditorium, ICTS-TIFR
Program Description This will be a hands-on exploration of everyday physical phenomena, ranging from static electricity and magnetism to experiencing sound waves to exploring the interference of light waves to create color and patterns. Eligibility Open to school students in grades 9th - 12th and...more
Srikanth Pai (International Centre for Theoretical Sciences) and Pallavi Bhat (International Centre for Theoretical Sciences)
