This hands-on workshop will feature engaging activities from the Mathematics Laboratory, a space designed for exploring mathematical ideas and discovering patterns through experimentation. Participants will engage with a variety of games, puzzles, and teaching-learning materials to develop meaningful understandings of key middle school mathematics topics such as area, perimeter, algebra, and ratios. The workshop will emphasize how hands-on, playful approaches can foster deep mathematical reasoning and robust conceptual understanding.

Eligibility

Open to school students from Grades 6 to 8 in Bengaluru. Please register using the link below. For group participation from schools, write to outreach@icts.res.in. Participation is by invitation only.

About the Speaker

Dr. Shweta Naik is a mathematics education researcher at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR, Mumbai. She earned her PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Michigan in 2018, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Northern Colorado. Holding a master’s degree in mathematics from Pune University, Dr. Naik’s work centers on developing resources that strengthen teachers’ specialized mathematical knowledge for effective classroom practice.

She teaches graduate-level courses on mathematics pedagogy and research methodology for master’s and doctoral students. Her recent research examines how girl students engage with complex, non-routine mathematical problems in collaborative settings such as the Maths Circle.

Currently, Dr. Naik leads the Mathematics Laboratory at HBCSE, where school students and teachers engage in hands-on activities to explore mathematical patterns, structures, and connections embedded in school mathematics.
