This talk will outline the planning and strategy adopted by India's Space architects and visionaries, Dr Vikram Sarabhai and Prof Satish Dhawan. The sustainability of the Indian space endeavours, owes much to these pioneers who visualised the need for development of self-reliant capability in Space, large scale application of its capabilities to a variety of National endeavours, creation of the relevant stake holders, suitable setting up of organisational structures and institutional mechanisms and ensuring political and public support. Further the growth of the industrial base for supporting India's space endeavour and a broad international collaborative and cooperative framework are other dimensions.
