I will discuss efforts in engineering exotic systems of light and matter. This field lies at the heart of physics and engineering and is important both from a fundamental perspective and from the point of view of device applications. These efforts have helped in our understanding of fundamental concepts in physics such as entanglement, correlations and transport in far-from-equilibrium open quantum systems. I will also discuss the technological applications of research in this direction ranging from realizations of quantum devices (such as diodes, rectifiers, transistors) to photonic microwave amplifiers and lasers.
