Hawking's life story - of a brilliant mind trapped in a failing body and yet able to transcend these limitations to do creative work of the highest order on some of the most fundamental questions asked by mankind - is a genuinely inspirational one. In this talk, I will try to give a glimpse of the pathbreaking discoveries made by Hawking on black holes and on the physics of the early universe. I will also place his scientific legacy in the broader context of contemporary developments in string theory which shows the lasting and far-reaching impact of his work.
