Over-representation of men in the STEM fields has been a problem that has been debated across the globe for over three decades. The problem often gets framed by metaphors such as the "leaky-pipeline", the "glass-ceiling" and the "labyrinth to leadership". How useful are these metaphors in the design of mitigation interventions? What are the commonly  propounded drivers of the problem and are they substantiated by the  evidence?   What are the lessons to be drawn from past interventions? I will discuss these questions and what the answers  mean as  we  strive towards making our scientific enterprise welcoming for everybody.
