Abhishek Dhar, ICTS faculty member, has been elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the field of Statistical Physics.

Abhishek Dhar’s research is focused on understanding how the macroscopic laws of physics, such as Fourier's law of heat conduction, emerge from microscopic laws such as those given by classical mechanics and quantum mechanics. He is also interested in the foundations of statistical mechanics, in understanding large deviations and rare events in physical processes and the problem of measurement in quantum mechanics.

The National Academy of Sciences, India (initially called “The Academy of Sciences of United Provinces of Agra and Oudh”) was founded in the year 1930, with the objectives to provide a national forum for the publication of research work carried out by Indian scientists and to provide opportunities for exchange of views among them.
