The open day at IISc was celebrated on Sat. 1st March 2014. As a part of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) outreach activities, ICTS participated in the same event.
"The Scales of the Universe" was a visual demonstration of the various length scales present in the Universe, plotted on a log scale. It ranged from 10^(-35) m (-35 on the log scale), i.e, the length scale of string theory and quantum gravity, to 10^(26) m (+26 on the log scale), ie, the length scale of the observable universe. This demonstration was extended along the entire length of the ICTS corridor. There were total of 20 posters that gave visual representation of the physical phenomena, including subatomic particles, DNA, cells, organisms, oceans, planets, stars, and galaxies.
There were few Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 exhibits like Wave tube, Chladni's Plate, Fractals, Walk the function, Permeability demonstrated along with posters on Mathematical equations and Mathematics in everyday life. There were screening of videos about in-house research and ICTS faculty showcasing their area of research. There was also a display of ICTS site progress photographs.
We received overwhelming response for the program. It was attended by at least 250-300 school, college students, teachers, parents. Most of ICTS postdocs and faculty participated and interacted with visitors.
