Abstract:

We believe that most of the matter in the universe does not make light, so astronomers like to speak of a universe that is filled with `dark matter'. In addition, black holes are objects from which light cannot escape, so it is natural to ask if the dark matter is made of black holes. I'll discuss how astronomers are trying to answer this question.

About the Speaker:

Ravi grew up in Mumbai, got his BSc at Haverford College - which has one of the oldest cricket grounds in the US - and got his PhD from Cambridge University where he was a Marshall Scholar. He is now based at the University of Pennsylvania, where he develops physical models and statistical methods which allow the data from large-scale galaxy and cluster surveys to constrain models of galaxy formation and cosmology.
