Srinivasa S. R. Varadhan was born in Madras (Chennai), India in 1940. He got his B. Sc. from Presidency College in 1959 and his Ph.D. from the Indian Statistical Institute in 1963. Since 1963 he has been working at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, where he is currently a Professor. He was awarded the Abel Prize in 2007 for his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations.
