Abstract
Point particles in three spatial dimensions are not expected to exhibit topological phases as their spacetime trajectories fail to exhibit non-trivial linking. Fracton models get around this restriction by hosting subdimensional particles which exhibit more restricted motion. I will describe the basics of this phenomenon, how one can view it as a gauging of systems with subsystem symmetries and comment on the connection to symmetric tensor field theories.
