Abstract
Monsoons is the lifeline for our country. I will begin by giving a bird's eye view of the mean monsoons. Then the fluctuation of monsoon within a season (intraseasonal variations) particularly their spatio-temporal variations as seen through Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (MSSA) of satellite based rainfall data will be discussed. Using longer dataset of rainfall from India Meteorological Department I will discuss the trends in intraseasonal variability and also at higher time scales (commonly known as synoptic scales). Using modelling simulations I will discuss the impact of localised high rainfall events on the mean monsoon.
