Abstract

Cohesion between granular particles is commonplace in naturally occurring geological materials, stored food grains, and soil deposits with organic content.  Sometimes, cohesion is also artificially introduced as in the case of cement mortars, composites, and insect nests.  I will discuss the mechanical behavior of cohesive granular materials at two length scales.  At the ensemble length scale, I will describe experiments through which I delineate the effect of small amounts of interparticle cohesion, which adds significant strength and stiffness to a granular ensemble. At the microscale, i.e. particle scale – I show that the rotation, and sliding of individual particles is arrested.  I use a combination of x ray computed microtomography and x ray diffraction on the synchrotron for conducting these experiments. Further, I will present some other instances of inter particle cohesion and its manifestation at both length scales.
