It is with deep sadness that ICTS shares the news of the passing of Jim Simons on May 10, 2024, in New York.
A renowned mathematician, investor, and philanthropist, Jim Simons’ contributions have left an indelible mark on the scientific community and society at large. The Chern-Simons topological invariant, which bears his name, has had a profound impact not only in mathematics but also in various areas of physics, such as quantum field theory and string theory, together with applications in condensed matter physics. In 1994, alongside his wife Marilyn, Jim Simons established the Simons Foundation, a testament to his commitment to advancing basic, curiosity-driven scientific research. His belief in the power of discovery and innovation was aimed at improving the human condition and addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
In 2015, the ICTS was fortunate to become one of the institutions worldwide that benefited significantly from Jim’s vision, receiving significant support from the Simons Foundation starting in 2015. Initially set for five years and renewed in 2020, this institutional grant was more than financial support — it was a vote of confidence and a source of prestige. This backing has deeply influenced ICTS, fostering groundbreaking research across various scientific fields.
Jim Simons’ legacy will continue to inspire and propel ICTS’ work forward. ICTS extends its deepest condolences to his family and all touched by his visionary spirit.
