Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, passed away on April 25, 2025, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shape the future of India’s scientific and educational endeavours.
Dr. Kasturirangan was a member of the TIFR Council since June 2004. He played a pivotal role in the founding of ICTS-TIFR, continuing his unwavering support and encouragement till the end. Dr. Kasturirangan was crucial in establishing the connection with the state government that facilitated ICTS-TIFR’s acquisition of land in Hesaraghatta, North Bengaluru. The new campus, spread over 78,000 square metres, was inaugurated in 2015. He has, over the years, enabled vital support from various authorities for the development of the institute.
Born on October 24, 1940, in Ernakulam, Kerala, Dr. Kasturirangan’s contribution to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is one of the biggest pillars of his legacy. He served as the Chairman of ISRO from 1994-2003.
Dr. Kasturirangan was also one of the chief architects of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. ICTS-TIFR had the privilege of hosting Dr. Kasturirangan and the other members of the NEP committee at the campus for brainstorming sessions on the policy. He visited ICTS-TIFR on other occasions, including to deliver an Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture titled “The Early Indian Space Endeavour: An Anecdotal Account.”
He has been recognized by India’s highest honours, including the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan.
