1. Project Assistant: Urgent requirement

Number of positions: 01

Project: Turbulent dynamics and energy cascades of internal gravity waves

This project aims to identify the detailed pathways internal gravity waves take to go from large forcing scales to small dissipative scales. The research will be interdisciplinary in nature and will involve the usage of applied mathematical techniques, high resolution numerical simulations, and big data management. Direct numerical simulations and reduced model development will be pursued as part of this research.

Essential qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree (3 or 4 years) in Engineering/Physics/Mathematics/Geophysics/ Atmosphere-Ocean Science or related disciplines.
  2. Working knowledge in the area of partial differential equations, Fourier analysis, and numerical methods, confirmed by courses taken in degree programs.
  3. At least one year research experience in geophysical fluid dynamics, computational modelling of partial differential equations, or related areas.
  4. Proficiency in scientific programming using Python, with working knowledge in writing spectral codes that can scale across CPUs.

Desirable qualifications:

  1. Experience in developing Python-based pseudospectral solvers for capturing turbulent flows.
  2. In depth understanding of internal gravity waves, geophysical turbulence, turbulent energy transfers in flows.
  3. Excellent English writing and communication skills.

Maximum monthly salary: Rs. 27,000 + HRA as per norms

How to Apply: Interested candidates must email a single pdf containing the below documents in the order given below to jimthomas@icts.res.in by 30/06/2026.
  1. Cover letter (800 words or less) explaining how the applicant’s background and previous research experiences make the person a good fit for the position advertised.
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV) detailing the academic path, relevant courses, research projects, and academic achievements.
  3. A sample Python code for a pseudospectral solver for a nonlinear turbulence generating partial differential equation of the candidate's choice. This code must be well commented and should demonstrate the applicant’s proficiency in writing Python codes.

Appointment will be for a maximum period of three months. The selected candidate is expected to join immediately after selection to work on the project.
