Abstract

NASA's Kepler mission has found over 3000 confirmed planets and over 1000 more planet candidates. One of the big surprises of these findings is the abundance of multiplanet systems in extremely compact orbits. Traditional planet formations scenarios have trouble explaining how nature is so efficient in creating such systems. I will talk about a novel look at the formation of these systems proposed by us which uses well known processes active in a pro planetary disk to explain how these planets may have formed. I will also talk about the implications of this scenario and its successes in explaining some of the observed trends.
