We will show that both the horospherical flow and the geodesic flow on (circle bundles on) compact Riemann surfaces are ergodic with respect to a natural measure. This will be shown to be a simple consequence of a theorem (The Howe-Moore Ergodicity Theorem) on unitary representations of non-compact simple Lie groups.  We will use methods of functional analysis to prove the latter.
