Abstract
The box-ball system is a simple discrete dynamical system in which groups of balls move and interact in a striking way: after colliding, they re-emerge with their shapes and speeds unchanged, much like solitons in continuous systems. Despite its elementary definition, the system has a rich hidden structure. I will explain how the box-ball system fits into a broader family of integrable systems arising from statistical mechanics and combinatorics, and describe some results about their structure.
