Abstract
A dimer is a box in R^d such that one of its sides has length 2 and the rest are of length 1. Trimers are the same but now one has side length 3. The main questions which concern us are:
1) Given a region when can it be tiled by dimers or trimers?
2) What does a randomly chosen tiling look like?
There are many aspects of this question but I will focus on some closer to my heart starting from the Hall’s matching lemma to Conway-Lagarias Thurston group leading to the cohomology of dynamical systems as studied by Klaus Schmidt. For most of the talk I will be surveying previous work and describing road-blocks. In the end I will describe some recent inroads we have made with some help by Deepak Dhar, Terrence George and Advait Razhdan.
